Why New Year Resolutions fail so fast

The holidays are finally over here, so Jules tells me the diet is officially on (T&C’s apply - see below 😁)

Talking of which, have a look at the most common New Year’s resolutions set in 2023 and see if your's are in there…


But how long do New Year’s resolutions actually last?

  • 43% of all people expect to fail before February
  • Almost one out of four quit within the first week of setting their New Year’s resolution
  • Most people quit before the end of January
  • Only 9% see their resolutions through until succession


At the end of the day, resolutions are nothing more than goals. So what’s the difference between starting these in January or any other time of year? Waiting 12 months to set a new goal is just crazy - why waste all that time doing the same thing over and over when you could be doing something new?

But if you did set NY Resolutions and you feel like they're already slipping away, here’s what you can do:

Losing Motivation
Your ‘Why’ isn’t clear enough: Define EXACTLY why you want to change this thing in your life (what's the pain point?) and then find an accountability partner or group to keep you motivated.


Being too Busy
If you cut out one hour of TV or Social Media every day, that 365 hours would add up to nine 40-hour workweeks a year, or two extra months of productive time 🤯


Shift in Goals or Priorities
Your goal (resolution) was too big. Break it down into bite size chunks and celebrate reaching each milestone along the way.


Here's the other thing - some people actually want to make change in their life but don’t know what it looks like, so...

Using that extra 1 hour a day, here are some ideas:

  • Take up a new sport or hobby
  • Read more books
  • Write a book
  • Learn a new language
  • Start an online business
  • Research a new location (and go there)
  • De-clutter your home
  • Learn to meditate

There are endless possibilities to change or try something new, our job is to decide what that looks like for us and to take the first step towards it.
